Kristy Mathisen, AMFT

She/Her/Hers

Kristy is a trilingual Marriage and Family Therapist who is passionate about providing access to important mental health services to clients in their own native language, whether it be ASL, Spanish, or English. In whichever language she’s using, Kristy conveys empathy, compassion, and understanding to her clients, facilitating a therapeutic relationship where clients not only feel seen, heard, and understood, but also valued and accepted as they are, while also empowered to grow and improve.

The privileges that Kristy continuously attempts to acknowledge include white, hearing, cisgender, straight, Christian (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints), and native-English-speaking. Kristy shares common experiences with survivors of narcissistic abuse, the chronic illness and disability communities, and those navigating generational trauma, and as such she is intimately aware of the specific challenges faced by people in these groups and uniquely positioned to provide empathic and understanding care in her therapeutic approach.

Kristy views her clients from a Person-Centered lens, tailoring her approach to each client depending on age and need. She uses evidenced-based practices such as Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) for children ages 3-11, and Child Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT) for parents wanting to improve their relationship with their young kids. She uses trauma-informed practices including EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and Emotion Focused Therapy with adults, and enjoys using Sand Tray Therapy, Art Therapy and expressive arts interventions when applicable.

Utah Valley University has remained Kristy’s academic home, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Deaf Studies with a minor in Spanish, and an advanced degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. Before becoming a therapist, Kristy worked for 8 years as a professional sign language interpreter in Utah and Las Vegas, and her experiences as an interpreter in various settings and locations have informed her understanding of and appreciation for the human experience. Advanced training in CCPT, EMDR, and IFS has prepared Kristy to work with young children and their parents, as well as individuals, couples, and families impacted by trauma.

Do you want to better understand yourself or a loved one, or create seemingly impossible change in your habits and relationships? Kristy is here to walk with you on your healing journey!
